Overview

Innsbruck, gem of the Tyrol

A picture-perfect Austrian city with Alpine appeal, Innsbruck blends lavish baroque palaces and designer boutiques with old-world taverns and glass-fronted bars. Glittering with crystals and shining slopes, it’s steeped in tradition but by no means traditional – as Bögen’s all-night parties confirm.

About Austria

Start your discovery of the graceful monuments of Innsbruck with the Imperial Palace, a medieval castle transformed into a rococo palace by the Empress Marie-Therese.

Not far from here stands the impressive Cathedral of Innsbruck dating back from the 18th century. Don’t miss the emblem of Innsbruck: the Little Golden Roof ("Goldenes Dach"). Its construction was ordered by the most important leading figure of Innsbruck, Maximilien the 1st. Up above town, you will find the Renaissance-style Ambras Castle with its charming apartments and beautiful portraits of the Hapsburg family.

If you’re fond of history, you will appreciate a visit of the National Tyrol Museum presenting the history of the Tyrol from Prehistory

Taste the specialities of the region, such as Schlutzkrapfen (dumplings stuffed with cheese or spinach), Käsespätzle (pasta tossed with onions and cheese) and Tiroler Gröstl (pan with potatoes, meat and vegetables) in the Tiroler Wirsthaus, one of the typical restaurants.

Train station(s)

Trains are a convenient way of reaching many towns and cities throughout Europe. Wasn’t as good as expected |
"I don't understand the point of paying for first class. Despite being advertised, there was no free wifi, no drinks or snacks included, and there were 6 people crammed into a small booth. Yet other booths had barely any people. A small bottle of water was €2.80. The staff in the restaurant were incredibly rude. I don't actually understand what paying for first class got me... "

    Rail Test |
"We chose rail as it represented the most convenient and cost effective way to travel from Innsbruck to Venice with the luggage that we needed for a 12 day cruise. Once seated, the trip was pleasant and uneventful. Finding the right carriage and loading luggage which include 2 large suitcases had to be left in the passage outside the cabin. We found that our reserved seats had been occupied by some members of a large family group who claimed that they were told that they could sit anywhere but once it was made clear that we had reserved seats they moved, but left their luggage in the overhead racks. • Good but noisy |
"What no quiet coaches on German ICE trains? Please think about it as some people are very noisy travellers and we like quiet coaches such as available on Eurostar, French TGVs and Italian fast trains! "

"This train was different from the others that we took during our holidays in Europe. The train has compartments. The one we were in allowed for a maximum of 6 passengers. Seats were generally comfortable but luggage space was a bit restricted especially if you were travelling with a medium sized bag and a backpack each. Other than that, the journey was enjoyable and relaxing. "
