Overview

South of France, in reach of Spain

Perpignan, between Spain and France, it’s a whole culture!

In 1963, Salvador Dali declared that the railway station of Perpignan was indeed the centre of the whole universe. Is it real or not, nobody knows. Yet one thing is for sure: Perpignan, capital of the Pyrénées Orientales department, is definitely a pleasurable city.

About France

Perpignan used to belong to the counts of Barcelona and became french only after the Thirty Years’ War in 1659. Thus, you should not be surprised to find there a pretty interesting mixture of catalan and french cultures.

Wonders like the cathedral of Saint John the Baptist or the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, as well as many places and ballads along the river Basse are not to be missed.
Together with tasty wines from the Roussillon area, you might also enjoy the traditionnal boles de picolat (delicious catalan meatballs served with beans).

In Perpignan and around, you will find all you were looking for!

"The train was on time, clean and comfortable. The area I sat in did not have enough room for everyone's luggage and it was a problem getting it stowed. The cost was reasonable and I think good value for money. The buffet car was extremely limited, but some food was available. The stations at both ends were easy to find. The boards were easy to read. From Paris Gare Lyon it was easy to transfer to the metro to get to where we wanted within Paris. "

"We had a lovely relaxing trip . It is extremely easy and once you have your luggage onboard the only thing to do it read a book, or iPad etc. Power is on hand and the coach is lovely and clean. "

"Best train trip ever. 900Km in a very clean, comfortable quiet coach. Definitely worth the few extra Euros to go first class. Even at top speed if you close your eyes you would hardly know the train was moving. Easy to book tickets on line but surprised we were never asked to show them!! "

"It was a very good train ride as far as comfort and ease leaving fromCDG. But however if you are English speaking you really need to have a fair idea of the upcoming stations as the announcements are not clear and you need to be ready with bags and things ready to alight. "

"The service I received was very satisfactory. One thing I would say is that the carriage numbers were not clearly displayed and as a result I sat in what I thought was my seat but it turned out I was in the wrong carriage. Thankfully the gentleman who came to sit in that seat was very polite and explained that my carriage was the next one along. Apart from that the trip was a pleasant experience. "The train trip was excellent in every respect. We had a very cheap first class ticket and the train was on time. The five hour trip was interesting and the train ride very smooth. Will definitely travel again when next in Europe "

"The TGV was crowded. My allocated seat was occupied. There was a 1-hour wait in MONTPELLIER before transferring to a local, slower and less comfortable "express". The fare paid for a second-class ticket was almost twice that paid previously for a non-change first class ticket. I will avoid booking in this manner in future. "

"Excellent trip which we really enjoyed. There was no indication if food and drinks would be served in 1st class so we eventually bought from the buffet car. "
