Overview

Pont du Gard, a UNESCO world heritage site

Standing at 48 meters high, the Pont du Gard is the tallest Roman bridge-aqueduct in the world. Dating back to the beginning of the Common Era (50 AD), but still in a remarkably good condition, this UNESCO World Heritage monument stands in a natural setting of 165 hectares of Mediterranean landscape and is easily accessible by shuttles from the Nîmes train station (0h30 trip).

About France

2,000 years ago it was designed to convey water to Nîmes, showing the extraordinary know-how of Roman engineers. Learn about the roman civilization through the multimedia kiosks in the 2,500 m2 museum. Special activities are available for children.
A guided visit of the Pont du Gard with a walk on the top level, where the water used to flow, is an unforgettable experience. You can taste seasonal Mediterranean cuisine at Les Terrasses restaurant located at the foot of the monument.

Every year, in July, Pont du Gard invites artists from around the world to perform during a festival called Lives au Pont. It attracts more than 20,000 people!

Our tip: Enjoy the countryside and Garrigue landscapes at the water’s edge with picnics, hiking or swimming. In 2015 Pont du Gard will celebrate its 30th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
