Getting around Spain by train couldn’t be easier with Renfe, the Spanish rail system. The high speed AVE trains whisk passengers up and down the country on the broad Renfe network, in comfort and style.

The high speed train Alta Velocidad Espanola (AVE) was launched in 1992 by Renfe, the Spanish national railway company. The AVE trains travel at speeds of up to 186mph across the Renfe network, all over Spain. There are 52 trains a day between Madrid and Barcelona and 40 trains to Seville, as well as two trains a day between Barcelona Malaga and Seville. Passengers using the AVE trains can enjoy travelling to many other Spanish destinations too including Valencia, Zaragoza and Valladolid.
An amazing experience
Tickets for the Renfe’s AVE trains can be booked up to two months in advance and check in closes 30 minutes before departure. All ticket checks and passport checks are done before the train leaves so make sure you arrive in plenty of time – you don’t want to be rushing on your amazing adventure.
The AVE trains are based on the high quality stylish design of the French TGV and passengers in all classes of travel will be comfortable and relaxed. All passengers can enjoy radios and TV screens in-seat and spacious cabins with plenty of legroom.
There are three classes of travel on the Renfe AVE trains.
First Class offers passengers access to station lounges before departure (check which stations have this service), and once onboard passengers will enjoy an in-seat meal and refreshments.
Club Class passengers can enjoy an a la carte restaurant and bar service at their seat while for those on a tighter budget the Standard Class on the AVE trains offers delicious snacks and tasty drinks from the bar buffet.
Fares and passes
There are a range of fares you can choose from depending on what you want when you buy your AVE train ticket. Some people want more flexibility and others know exactly when they want to travel, but our handy Rail Ticket Finder will help you decide.
Booking a point to point ticket is the best way to get between two cities but there are train passes also on offer with Rail Europe so you can travel all over Spain and further afield.
Just remember that if you do have a rail pass you will still need to make a reservation on the AVE trains, and with Rail Europe it is possible to reserve your seats while booking your pass.
