Overview

The cogwheel begins at the base of Mount Pilatus in Alpnachstad and runs over uniquely constructed tracks to the summit of the mountain. Depending on snow conditions, this thrilling rail ride operates May to November, beginning at the mountain’s base in Alpnachstad and travelling over uniquely constructed tracks to the mountain’s summit, where a scenic display of over 70 peaks and five lakes await. Treat your taste buds to a culinary delight at one of the fabulous restaurants, or have some fun outdoors by climbing at the biggest suspension rope park in Central Switzerland. Or try some hiking or toboggan sledging. This excursion will leave you with fond, memories of Switzerland’s majestic beauty.

Who can buy a rail pass?

Any person living outside the participating countries can use the Mount Pilatus. Please note that residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein are not eligible.

Seat reservation

A seat reservation is a guaranteed seat on board a train.

Seat reservations are compulsory for high speed, international and night trains. However, as you will be travelling with a rail pass, you will only have to pay for a small reservation fee, as opposed to the usual standard fare.

Seats are generally available for reservation up to 90 days prior to departure and are limited. Book early to secure your seat!
We are not currently offering online seat reservations for high speed, international and night trains covered by the BritRail passes.You can book your seat reservation directly from train stations once you are in the United Kingdom.

Our tip:
Most regional trains do not require a seat reservation. Just hop on board with a valid rail pass, find a seat and relax as the train takes you to one of the many destinations served.

Mount Pilatus

Includes round-trip travel from Alpnachstad or Kriens in Central Switzerland to the Pilatus Summit.

Conditions:

  • Discounted fares are only valid with a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card and Eurail Passes that include Switzerland, please refer to the type of pass you have when selecting your tickets.
  • All child rates are valid for children ages 6 -15.
  • Children under 6 are free.
  • Children traveling with a Swiss Family Card are free when they travel with a parent or guardian that is traveling with a Swiss Travel Pass. Where noted below, please indicate the number of children that are NOT covered by the Swiss Family Card. Note: these children will be required to purchase a ticket.
  • Tickets and the Swiss Transfer ticket are not valid for rail pass discounts.
  • Exchange voucher for actual ticket within 6 month of date of issue with cashier at the Mount Pilatus Station in Alpnachstad or Kriens.
  • Tickets are valid for six months from the date of purchase.
  • Prices are subject to change.
  • Cogwheel railway operates from early/mid- May to Nov, 2017.
  • Gondola and aerial cableway service is closed for maintenance from Oct 23 - Nov 10, 2017.
