We recently purchased a 1st Class Saver France-Italy Pass hoping for true flexibility and freedom of travel at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, many of our trips were on TGV and Freccia trains, which require reservations and involved extra costs added to the price of the pass. SNCF don’t seem to issue reservations on line for pass holders, so going through a booking agency adds further costs. In our case, reservations and booking fees added almost 50% to the cost of our pass and made it more expensive than buying point to point tickets. As the reservation process, is the same as buying a point to point ticket (which includes a reservation in the price), it is just as easy to buy the ticket online. The Rail Europe site was easy to navigate, we were notified when the reservations went in the post and they all arrived promptly. Having to make reservations took away the true flexibility that Eurail passes offered in the past. We ended up being tied to a particular train and time for the majority of our trip. But, the first class travel was fantastic (2nd was often crowded and noisy) and we always knew we would have a seat on those longer journeys. Regional train routes is where the pass really shines; fill in the date and jump on the train. Next time, we will book point to point tickets when a reservation is required and a pass for all the journeys on regional trains.
