Basel, the Swiss capital of art and culture

Basel, known as Switzerland’s capital of art and culture, is located in the heart of Europe, just south of Germany and next to the Alsace region in France. It can be the perfect base to visit three European countries in one go.

About Switzerland

The excellent public transport ensures that inhabitants and visitors alike can move quickly and comfortably around the city and even across the border into the neighbouring countries of France and Germany. The pocket-sized metropolis offers about 40 museums, classical patrician houses and medieval churches side by side with modern buildings designed by major international architects such as Herzog & de Meuron or Renzo Piano.

The Barfuesserplatz is one of the best places to eat in Basel.

The medley of sophisticated shops in Basel is sure to keep you occupied. Seize the opportunity to buy a Swiss Rolex or Victorinox knife in Freie Strasse.

    Relatively easy travel | Gail t. | 2014/07/01
"As first time travellers in Europe, our travel from Paris to Basel on the TGV was very relaxing once we had found our way around Gare Lyon station and located our platform. It's disconcerting not to know which platform your train is leaving from until 10 minutes before departure. Perhaps it would be a good idea to issue travel information that at least indicates which hall the train departs from and how to identify the departure platform. "

Family from Paris to Engelberg | Gary s. | 2014/02/25
"We travelled as a family of 2 adults and two teenagers from Paris to Engelberg, Switzerland, 11 Feb 2014. The 6 hour trip involved changes of trains in Basel, then Lucerne before arriving in Engelberg, late afternoon. It involved firstly the TGV Lyria then two Intercities trains. We didn't have seat reservations for the final train from Lucerne to Engelberg as they ran every hour. We only had 5 minutes connection times there, however still managed to run and get on the very next train. The TGV Lyria was even better than our Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris earlier. Comfortable and spacious in 2 Class. Diner wagon good with friendly staff. Also Australian Rail Europe staff quick to reply with initial queries. Great. "

    1st class on ICE | Craig h. | 2013/12/30
"Seats were good, convenience great, scenery good, limited baggage storage in 1st Class, we were traveling for 4 weeks so a family of 4 with 4 big bags need some storage space. ICE is very poor in this area for 1st class tickets, more storage in 2nd class (and much much better on TGV). "

    lucky to catch train | Robert h. | 2013/10/28
"After nearly missing this train due to inept Paris taxi service, this was a welcome relief. The tickets that we had printed out from home, did not have a clear carriage number, which meant that we were in the wrong carriage and had to drag our 4 suitcase through 2 carriages to get to the right one. Once in there, it was a very comfortable and enjoyable trip and quite fast. "

    Lyria - Paris to Basel | Raymund Chee Wai w. | 2013/10/27
"We travelled by train throughout our recent holidays in Europe and can say that it is a rather relaxing way to travel. Not waiting at airports, more leg room than in a plane, etc. Some trains were more comfortable then others. Our journey on the Lyria from Paris to Basel was one of the more notable ones and was the one where the meal served was better than the other trains we took. "
