La Rochelle, an old fortified city facing the ocean

La Rochelle’s boat-bobbing harbour and arch-covered streets feel more Mediterranean than Atlantic. Medieval defence towers guard the entrance to the Old Port, where diners feast on curried mussels at waterside restaurants. Cross the bridge to Île de Ré for a lazy day on the beach.

About France

In the historic centre, between the arch-covered streets, you can see a large number of graceful timber-framed or sculpted houses from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

Don’t miss the visit of one of the most beautiful Town Hall in France, dating back from the Renaissance period, where you can learn the history of the city. Have a closer look to the Medieval defence towers which can be explored and to the imposing "Grosse Horloge" from the 14th century: old gate in the ramparts located between the port and the city.

Facing the old port, the Aquarium will immerse you into the fascinating world of the ocean.

First not the last Rail trip | Malcolm c. | 2015/09/18
"This was our first RailEurope trip. The words that come to mind to describe it would be : very convenient at start and finish, comfortable, relaxing, cheap compared to car hire, quick, informative - view the countryside rather than the road traffic. Train travel will probably feature more in our travel itinerary in the future. "

"I was in a 4 chair seating arrangement and did not realise that I would have to sit and face strangers the whole trip I also did not realise that the platform does nto get announced till 20minutes before boarding Nonetheless, I enjoyed the train trip The best thing is you support staff: I used the real time chat on your website in order to make the booking . It turns out I was using a server that would not allow me to book tickets. i also used the information desk at Paris station- they were also very good "

    Trains through France | Geoffrey l. | 2014/07/17
"This was one of several trips we did over last 3 weeks. Train was on time, booked seats essential as we had to remove a family who had squatted in our seats, but no argument. Great trip through scenic countryside but stressful transfer to next connection. We had been warned by Rail Europe to take care with only 20 minutes between trains but made it with 1 minute to spare!! Great way to get around Europe and looking forward to next trip! "

    Fast and Relaxing | Jennifer b. | 2013/11/25
"I had a fast and relaxing journey, first class, between Paris and London. The only down side was that it was very difficult for me to lift my suit case up the two steps onto the train. There was no one there to help me. "

    Paris to Paris | Robert b. | 2013/08/13
"Our round trip Paris - La Rochelle - Cognac - Paris was completed smoothly and on time. The trains were clean and comfortable. The "local" trains were packed and no seats could be booked but we always found a seat. We travelled with a small bag on wheels so luggage was no problem. "

    Train was late  | Kate c. | 2013/06/11
"Train station was hard to find we went to the wrong part first then have to go around the back and thankfully some locals helped us otherwise we might still be looking to the a4 size sing to get to the platforms! Train. Was late and food on the train was very expensive. "

    trip to La Rochelle | Ralph w. | 2013/05/30
"the trip was good, fast service, efficient, easy. Information on how to use the ticket was inadequate. Waited in a queue, along with other travellers unsure of how to validate our on line ticket before boarding. Better information about this process, at the different stations would be invaluable!! "
