Overview

Strasbourg, the European capital

At just 2h20 away by TGV from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris Gare de l’Est railway station, Strasbourg, the European Capital, boasts a unique cultural and architectural heritage with its city center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Petite France quarter, the narrow streets with names evoking guilds and markets - all have retained their medieval charm. Strasbourg has been a great historic meeting place for centuries and today stands as the home of the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

About France

In the morning take a boat tour, with Batorama, on the river Ill. Lasting 1h10, the tour will allow you to discover the town and its various quarters including the historic town centre, the imperial German district and the area which is home to the European institutions. Afterwards, have a stroll in the town centre and pop in its souvenir shops for some quality shopping, before heading to see the amazing astronomical clock of the cathedral. At exactly 12:30 the clocks begins to whirr and the twelve apostles parade before Christ.

Visit the old pedestrian districts around the cathedral and the Petite France quarter which is the most picturesque district of old Strasbourg. Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this part of town where the streets have been built level with the waterways. Not far away are the Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam. End the afternoon in one of the numerous museums.

Our tip: Buy the Strasbourg Pass which offers free services and numerous discounts to discover all the monuments and not-to-be-missed landmarks, at your own pace and in total freedom.

Lunch in one of the many winstubs (small typically Alsatian restaurants) to savour local foods and wine.

Head to the Rue de la Mésange, where you will find all the leading high quality brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Vuitton, Cartier, etc. In the afternoon, take the Wine Route tour to several picturesque villages typical of the Lower Rhine region, and have a visit to a wine-cellar to taste the local wine. On the way back enjoy a flamenkuch (Pie baked in the flames) in a traditional restaurant.

"Train was spot on time and very comfortable. As hubby and I had prebooked reserved tickets even our seats were labeled with our names to ensure no other passengers were in our allocated seats. The only down side of train travel is the limited luggage space at the ends of each carrage. "

"Apart from the comfort and benefits of the train travel in itself, the taxi from our hotel to Gare de l'est to depart and taxi to the hotel on arrival in Nancy were both fast and inexpensive (compared to taxi to airports). "

"We enjoyed the "slower" train through the French countryside. We could see more and the "local" feeling of passengers getting on and off at regional stations added to the interest. Although slower than TGV we enjoyed the experience. "

TGV from Strasbourg to CDG | Philip b. | 2014/11/01
"Very comfortable trip. Convenient to go to CDG as we were flying back to Australia the next day, staying overnight at the Novotel. My only complaint is that when you book on line and print out the PDF copy of your eticket the coach number gets jumbled up with the rest of the text and is very difficult to read. Apart from that Rail Europe is a very easy web site to navigate. Thank you. "

"Being able to connect to the TGV at the airport is a BIG plus. Unfortunately, although we had 1st class tickets the carriage was more 2nd class, very disappointing! It appeared to be an OLD TGV carriage. This was not the start to our 6 weeks of train travel we expected. , "

    Allocated seating | Terence w. | 2014/10/12
"On TGV and Eurostar, all 6-journeys over the last three weeks, the allocated seats had our backs to the direction of travel and provided practically no window area. Moving seats to a window area was possible only on two of the trips. "
