Overview

Strasbourg, the European capital

At just 2h20 away by TGV from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris Gare de l’Est railway station, Strasbourg, the European Capital, boasts a unique cultural and architectural heritage with its city center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Petite France quarter, the narrow streets with names evoking guilds and markets - all have retained their medieval charm. Strasbourg has been a great historic meeting place for centuries and today stands as the home of the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

About France

In the morning take a boat tour, with Batorama, on the river Ill. Lasting 1h10, the tour will allow you to discover the town and its various quarters including the historic town centre, the imperial German district and the area which is home to the European institutions. Afterwards, have a stroll in the town centre and pop in its souvenir shops for some quality shopping, before heading to see the amazing astronomical clock of the cathedral. At exactly 12:30 the clocks begins to whirr and the twelve apostles parade before Christ.

Visit the old pedestrian districts around the cathedral and the Petite France quarter which is the most picturesque district of old Strasbourg. Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this part of town where the streets have been built level with the waterways. Not far away are the Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam. End the afternoon in one of the numerous museums.

Our tip: Buy the Strasbourg Pass which offers free services and numerous discounts to discover all the monuments and not-to-be-missed landmarks, at your own pace and in total freedom.

Lunch in one of the many winstubs (small typically Alsatian restaurants) to savour local foods and wine.

Head to the Rue de la Mésange, where you will find all the leading high quality brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Vuitton, Cartier, etc. In the afternoon, take the Wine Route tour to several picturesque villages typical of the Lower Rhine region, and have a visit to a wine-cellar to taste the local wine. On the way back enjoy a flamenkuch (Pie baked in the flames) in a traditional restaurant.

    Good trip recommended | Peter a. | 2014/09/11
"We have used Rail Europe for our European rail tickets for several years and we have never had an significant issue or problem. The trains are always on time, we have never had an argument with fellow passengers about reserved seats. French trains are however not as clean as they were some years ago, nor are the stations great. Little has been done to easy baggage use. Few stations have lifts and you must carry your bag. It is very important to ensure you have manageable bags. We tend to travel in mid morning and over an early lunch and always take our lunch with us, including drinks and a snack. Paris Est station was much better than Nord du Gard, which is busy with few facilities. We also travelled from Strasbourg to Stuttgart on a German TGV equivalent and this trip was excellent. We recommend travelling first class and using the benefit of reserved seats. Arrive in sufficient time that you know where your carriage will be on the station, particularly if the train is not starting at your departure point. We printed our tickets in a station kiosk a couple of days before travelling. Also note that some tickets with Rail Europe are e-tickets and need to be printed by you in advance. These tickets cannot be printed on station kiosks. Our Strasbourg to Stuttgart trip had e-tickets. Most station staff are helpful and speak some English. Asa general rule, if you make and effort and you are polite, they respond in the same manner. There are always exceptions but rare. "

"The German TGV was noticeably cleaner than its French equivalent. We have an enjoyable trip from Strasbourg to Stuttgart. Stuttgart station and the surrounding area is under extensive renovation which makes getting out of the station and going the way you intended a little difficult. The train was comfortable, quiet and clean. We travelled in first class with reserved seats and this is recommended. Be aware that German train tickets are e-tickets and must be printed by you before travelling. "

TGV is not as nice as Thalys | Serena h. | 2014/09/09
"TGVs are nice when you don't get aisle seats. Aisle seats are uncomfortable as there is nothing to look at and you will inevitably fall asleep (most likely on the person next to you) if you don't have something to keep you occupied! They are also expensive and do not offer any complimentary wifi. "
