Overview

Strasbourg, the European capital

At just 2h20 away by TGV from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris Gare de l’Est railway station, Strasbourg, the European Capital, boasts a unique cultural and architectural heritage with its city center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Petite France quarter, the narrow streets with names evoking guilds and markets - all have retained their medieval charm. Strasbourg has been a great historic meeting place for centuries and today stands as the home of the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

About France

In the morning take a boat tour, with Batorama, on the river Ill. Lasting 1h10, the tour will allow you to discover the town and its various quarters including the historic town centre, the imperial German district and the area which is home to the European institutions. Afterwards, have a stroll in the town centre and pop in its souvenir shops for some quality shopping, before heading to see the amazing astronomical clock of the cathedral. At exactly 12:30 the clocks begins to whirr and the twelve apostles parade before Christ.

Visit the old pedestrian districts around the cathedral and the Petite France quarter which is the most picturesque district of old Strasbourg. Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this part of town where the streets have been built level with the waterways. Not far away are the Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam. End the afternoon in one of the numerous museums.

Our tip: Buy the Strasbourg Pass which offers free services and numerous discounts to discover all the monuments and not-to-be-missed landmarks, at your own pace and in total freedom.

Lunch in one of the many winstubs (small typically Alsatian restaurants) to savour local foods and wine.

Head to the Rue de la Mésange, where you will find all the leading high quality brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Vuitton, Cartier, etc. In the afternoon, take the Wine Route tour to several picturesque villages typical of the Lower Rhine region, and have a visit to a wine-cellar to taste the local wine. On the way back enjoy a flamenkuch (Pie baked in the flames) in a traditional restaurant.

    First class service | Stacia w. | 2014/01/22
"After arriving at CDG airport from Australia at 6.30 am we had plenty of time to find our way to the TGV. Once on the platform a conductor was available to direct us, just in case we might have it wrong. The service by the restaurant car was excellent. I enquired about dining in the restaurant car which was set with white tablecloths, rather nice slipping through the countryside having a meal and a glass of wine for lunch, we thought, however the staff kindly suggested that we need to be very careful of leaving our baggage unattended as they have had cases of people jumping on the train and taking luggage at various stops. No problem he says, I will come to your seat and take your order at the time we requested. He delivered a lovely hot meal of mushroom risotto and a salad and wine with complimentary bread to our seats and we enjoyed our meal while keeping an eye on our luggage. We were very impressed. Later we ordered coffee and he gave us a complimentary chocolate bar. Very kind. The train was clean and quiet and we arrived on time, tired but happy. The service is first class. . "

    Alsace Christmas Markets | Helen l. | 2014/01/18
"I travelled on a comfortable TGV train from Paris to Strasbourg, through the picturesque French countryside to see the Christmas Markets. It was a long held dream of mine to see the famous Christmas Markets of Strasbourg and Colmar and they were better than I dreamed they would be. They were magical, especially at night, plus a cup of Vin Chaud was a must, as it really warmed me on a cold winters night. "

    Very busy noisy train | Gavin o. | 2013/11/16
"We were in first class and our coach was nearly fully occupied. It made for a noisy and quite unpleasant trip. Why doesn't the German train system move to quiet coaches like Eurostar and the French TGVs? It would a big difference for travellers like us who like a quite, child free environment. "
