Overview

Strasbourg, the European capital

At just 2h20 away by TGV from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris Gare de l’Est railway station, Strasbourg, the European Capital, boasts a unique cultural and architectural heritage with its city center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Petite France quarter, the narrow streets with names evoking guilds and markets - all have retained their medieval charm. Strasbourg has been a great historic meeting place for centuries and today stands as the home of the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

About France

In the morning take a boat tour, with Batorama, on the river Ill. Lasting 1h10, the tour will allow you to discover the town and its various quarters including the historic town centre, the imperial German district and the area which is home to the European institutions. Afterwards, have a stroll in the town centre and pop in its souvenir shops for some quality shopping, before heading to see the amazing astronomical clock of the cathedral. At exactly 12:30 the clocks begins to whirr and the twelve apostles parade before Christ.

Visit the old pedestrian districts around the cathedral and the Petite France quarter which is the most picturesque district of old Strasbourg. Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this part of town where the streets have been built level with the waterways. Not far away are the Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam. End the afternoon in one of the numerous museums.

Our tip: Buy the Strasbourg Pass which offers free services and numerous discounts to discover all the monuments and not-to-be-missed landmarks, at your own pace and in total freedom.

Lunch in one of the many winstubs (small typically Alsatian restaurants) to savour local foods and wine.

Head to the Rue de la Mésange, where you will find all the leading high quality brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Vuitton, Cartier, etc. In the afternoon, take the Wine Route tour to several picturesque villages typical of the Lower Rhine region, and have a visit to a wine-cellar to taste the local wine. On the way back enjoy a flamenkuch (Pie baked in the flames) in a traditional restaurant.

    Very pleasant trip | Gavin o. | 2013/11/16
"We enjoyed this trip on an international TGV mainly because it was on time, we were located in one of the quiet coaches and it was quiet! The snack coupon handed out to first class was pleasant albeit a little insignificant. "

    France - Italy Rail Pass | Judith w. | 2013/10/29
"We recently purchased a 1st Class Saver France-Italy Pass hoping for true flexibility and freedom of travel at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, many of our trips were on TGV and Freccia trains, which require reservations and involved extra costs added to the price of the pass. SNCF don’t seem to issue reservations on line for pass holders, so going through a booking agency adds further costs. In our case, reservations and booking fees added almost 50% to the cost of our pass and made it more expensive than buying point to point tickets. As the reservation process, is the same as buying a point to point ticket (which includes a reservation in the price), it is just as easy to buy the ticket online. The Rail Europe site was easy to navigate, we were notified when the reservations went in the post and they all arrived promptly. Having to make reservations took away the true flexibility that Eurail passes offered in the past. We ended up being tied to a particular train and time for the majority of our trip. But, the first class travel was fantastic (2nd was often crowded and noisy) and we always knew we would have a seat on those longer journeys. Regional train routes is where the pass really shines; fill in the date and jump on the train. Next time, we will book point to point tickets when a reservation is required and a pass for all the journeys on regional trains. My advice is don’t rush to buy passes or tickets, plan your route and take into consideration those jour "

    Not a direct train | Maggie t. | 2013/10/13
"We booked the ticket because we needed to catch the plane back to China from Paris at Lunch time, so the earliest option would be this one. But unfortunately it stopped half way through the journey and made us a little worry. Anyway, arrived on time though but wondering why it said "direct" in the booking page. Sort of a misled from the beginning even though the travel time won't make the different, it should at least told us "1 stop" to ease our wonder. "

  • Strasbourg to Nancy Sept 2013 | . | 2013/10/10
"Rail Europe's instructions for sourcing and printing tickets from a machine at Stasbourg station were excellent. Two hour journey on a non-TGV train (1st class, had the carriage to ourselves) was quiet and comfortable, puzzling though why it cost more than a TGV journey of a much longer distance (also in first class) the next day. A pleasure to travel by train after 3 weeks of driving around France! "
