Overview

Strasbourg, the European capital

At just 2h20 away by TGV from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris Gare de l’Est railway station, Strasbourg, the European Capital, boasts a unique cultural and architectural heritage with its city center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Petite France quarter, the narrow streets with names evoking guilds and markets - all have retained their medieval charm. Strasbourg has been a great historic meeting place for centuries and today stands as the home of the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

About France

In the morning take a boat tour, with Batorama, on the river Ill. Lasting 1h10, the tour will allow you to discover the town and its various quarters including the historic town centre, the imperial German district and the area which is home to the European institutions. Afterwards, have a stroll in the town centre and pop in its souvenir shops for some quality shopping, before heading to see the amazing astronomical clock of the cathedral. At exactly 12:30 the clocks begins to whirr and the twelve apostles parade before Christ.

Visit the old pedestrian districts around the cathedral and the Petite France quarter which is the most picturesque district of old Strasbourg. Fishermen, millers and tanners once lived and worked in this part of town where the streets have been built level with the waterways. Not far away are the Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam. End the afternoon in one of the numerous museums.

Our tip: Buy the Strasbourg Pass which offers free services and numerous discounts to discover all the monuments and not-to-be-missed landmarks, at your own pace and in total freedom.

Lunch in one of the many winstubs (small typically Alsatian restaurants) to savour local foods and wine.

Head to the Rue de la Mésange, where you will find all the leading high quality brands such as Gucci, Hermès, Vuitton, Cartier, etc. In the afternoon, take the Wine Route tour to several picturesque villages typical of the Lower Rhine region, and have a visit to a wine-cellar to taste the local wine. On the way back enjoy a flamenkuch (Pie baked in the flames) in a traditional restaurant.

    Cost too much | Athalie a. | 2013/07/27
"A day trip Paris/Reims return. Paid for first class ticket - charged extra booking fee as advised by your company. This seems unnecessary as train was not full either on outward or return journey. Considering cost of first class Eurail pass, a booking fee for every single booking is excessive and should be included, as this information benefits the rail service as much, or more, than the customer. For example, this information would be of great benefit to your catering department. "

    Easy Travel | Stephen b. | 2013/07/14
"I was nervous about travelling via train from Germany to France due to the number of connections we needed to make. However, it was so easy to navigate the stations, platforms, carriages and seating arrangements. Once our luggage was stowed and we were sitting, the trip was a breeze. It is a comfortable way to travel. Make sure you travel in a first class carriage if your budget allows it. "

"Travel by TGV train though France is an easy and quick way to move between cities. We use it from time to time and it much more relaxing than flying or driving between major centres. The same applies thoughout all of Europe. "

"The ticket prices were a bit high even though they were "on sale", for a relatively short (2h30m) trip. However the seats were comfortable and everything was clear and on schedule. "
