Overview

Switzerland is a country where good chocolates, cuckoo clocks, famous cheeses and contemporary art form a beautiful whole.

The Swiss national railway company is the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF-FFS). Switzerland has one of the best railway network and public transportation system in Europe. The country is known for having some of the world’s best scenic trains including the Glacier Express, the Gornergratbahn and the Jungfraubahn. Thanks to international high speed trains, Switzerland has connections with France, Italy and Germany.

The spirit of a country can be seen through its cities. In Switzerland, cities have a blend of cultures, vibrant centres and a variety of entertainment. Its four main languages and wide range of traditional customs are reflections of this diversity. The Swiss Travel System allows you to visit popular cities like Bern, Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne, Montreux, Lausanne and Lugano.

Cityscape

The public transport network is excellent in Switzerland, so travel as much as you can by train or another public transport to visit the whole country. Bern, the capital, offers touristic sites such as Einstein’s house or the clock tower. Board a train to Lausanne to visit the cathedral, the museums and the amazing bridges. Finally, go to Zurich and experience the bustling nightlife in the Old Town.

Landscape

The landscapes are majestic in here. If you need a breath of fresh air or if you want to change of scenery, hop on a train to Switzerland and feast your eyes with the beautiful lakes, orchards, glaciers and mountains that you will find here.

Take Home

The typical souvenir you would buy is probably the Swiss army knife. Then why don’t you buy some watches or jewelleries which are traditional as well? If you prefer food, bring back home some cheese and chocolates!

Eat & Drink

Try the excellent but heavy Fondue, bubbling cheese and white wine in which you dunk bread or pieces of meat. You can easily find some pies, quiches or potato dishes as well. Of course you will have to taste chocolates!

New perspective

Take a train to Basel and visit this city thanks to a two-wheeled self-balancing electric vehicle, it is called the Segway. It will enable you to discover the city in an original and faster way!

  • Great Train Trip |
"The journey by train was fantastic very comfy and no hassles easy to see the country side and very convenient way to travel between cities. Would definitely travel by train again when in Europe. "

    Across the Alps |
"Our trip from Vienna to Innsbruck by rail was excellent. Very few passengers in our coach meant plenty of empty seats and windows to view out of. The countryside was beautiful. One minute you are looking at open farmland, the next mountain tops covered in snow. The four and half hours disappeared quickly, from boarding the train in Vienna and the next you are alighting in Innsbruck. I would recommend this train trip to any traveler fortunate enough to be holidaying in Austria. Both Vienna and Innsbruck are two cities you need to put in your must visit. "

"this is a good train, we a family of 9, including a 1 year old were comfortable and seated near to each other, though not all. "

  • Good trip |
"Our trip on the RJ service waas good. Comfortable, value for money and very convenient. I would always use the trains throughout Europe. Staff at terminal were also very helpful with questions. "

"A commuter train is just that. . .crammed into hard seats like sardines for the trip. Was not impressed with station staff in Salzberg when trying to get suitcases off before the commute continued on its journey. "

    Wonderful, easy travelling |
"How easy was this travelling by train - very easy. The train ran on time, it was clean, comfortable and loved every minute of my trip from Budapest to Prague. Serving of food and beverages was terrific and staff were very professional. The train change in Vienna was so easy and the information screens kept you informed at all times. Would highly recommend this style of travelling. Will certainly do it again. The glass waiting room on the platform was ideal and great protection from the elements and so easy to see your next train connection coming. Fabulous Rail Europe, we could learn a lot from you. "

    Good service to use |
"I was impressed with the ease of travel using the online service, especially when it also including organising my seat allocation when booking. The trains were heavily booked and without this service, I may have been standing for the entire journey! I gave the 4 stars for convenience purely because of the situation of the Kelenfoe Station at the end of the Green Line and not the more central railway station. My rail travels really were a stress free and enjoyable way to travel! "

    Departure Station |
"Our ticket was from Kelenford Station which was the most inhospitable place to go and catch our train to Zurich. No signage in English, nobody spoke English and man in ticket office in station building held up his hand 3 times to indicate that it was platform 15 that the train left from. There are no ramps or lift to platform level only stairs from the subway which runs under the tracks. The main Keleti Station would have been more suitable departure point. The trip after we got on was very good, the service during trip good so was the seating Overall good apart from departure station. "

  • Slow trip ,little food left |
"I was amazed that the train was so slow a lot of the time. I was more amazed that staff said the train had not be restocked for the return trip to Prague, There was very little you could buy to eat ot to drink !!! "
